Mongolian girl Marla:The race began the moment she was born

Before her eyes had even opened for the first time, newborn Mongolian girl, Marla, was in danger of going permanently blind.

Like her mother and grandmother, Marla’s vision was clouded by congenital cataracts. Such conditions can only be cured if treated between six to eight weeks after birth. It was too late when Marla’s mum received treatment and she became visually impaired permanently. So she was determined to save her daughter’s sight.

Fortunately, Marla was diagnosed at Orbis’s local partner hospital at 19 days old and underwent a successful operation three weeks later. She became the youngest patient in Mongolia to receive cataract surgery. Marla's mother was overjoyed that her daughter had escaped the family curse of blindness. Now four, Marla is happily exploring the world with her regained eyesight.

Had she missed the critical timing for treatment, this brave toddler’s sight loss would have been irreversible. Please help us in ensuring timely treatment for even more congenital eye disease sufferers like little Marla.
