Vietnam’s medical infrastructure is seriously inadequate

Pediatric ophthalmology services in Vietnam’s Binh Dinh Province are seriously inadequate, with many kids diagnosed with visual problems late. Miss Mandy Yim, Hong Kong Optometrist found Hongkongers are very lucky in the society that offers pre-school screening programme for every child aged four or above.

Miss Mandy Yim, Hong Kong Optometrist

As a Hong Kong-based optometrist of many years standing, I was genuinely horrified by the wretched quality of facilities and treatments on offer at a hospital in Binh Dinh Province. With a patient to nurse ratio of around 4 or 5 to 1 versus the normal 1 on 1, chronic staff shortages further worsened the problems facing premature babies in the hospital’s neo-natal intensive care unit.

Among 23 million of Vietnam youngsters, three million of them are suffering from various kinds of eye diseases, they are tortured by the after effects of conditions such as Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). Therefore, all premature babies born in Vietnam urgently need to be checked for abnormal blood vessels in their eyes, to receive prompt and effective drug or laser treatments. Thanks to Orbis and its donors, one hospital in Binh Dinh can now provide screening services. Tragically, many sufferers here still desperately need our help.

For the children with eye diseases, their future chances in life are even worse in poorer countries lacking in basic eye care knowledge and treatment. Unable to see the classroom blackboard or the way back home and deprived of the smiles of their parents, these kids’ daily lives are filled with fear.
