Know more about pediatric anesthesia

Dr. Andrew Choyce began working with Orbis as an Orbis Volunteer Anesthesiologist in 2005 and is now a Staff Anesthesiologist. When not prepping nervous children for eye surgery, Dr. Choyce is determined to equip his medical counterparts in poorer countries with the cutting-edge pediatric anesthesia techniques they need to deliver high-level care.

While Anesthesiologists and Ophthalmologists are essential for successful surgeries, the importance of Pediatric Anesthesiologist like Dr. Choyce is all too often overlooked. Before each surgery can begin, Anesthesiologists must first calm their tiny patients prior to anesthetizing them. After surgery is complete Anesthesiologists must be there the moment their little charges wake up. Dr. Choyce, who has more than 15 years’ experience as an Anesthesiologist, said: "It is my greatest responsibility to ensure every child enters and exits the operating room safely.

The beauty of Orbis is that its specialist international teams happily share cutting edge surgical knowledge with their counterparts in poorer regions.”

The Flying Eye Hospital program in Vietnam few years ago remains the most memorable time of the nearly 60 Orbis sight-restoring missions he’s participated in these past 16 years. It is a standard practice to invite parents into the surgery room to comfort their kids before anesthesia. There was a moment when a mother entered, he expected her to sit by as most parents do. Instead, she suddenly took her child in her arms and began singing him a lullaby. Dr. Choyce said that this reminds me how precious every child is to parents.

For the children with eye diseases, their future chances in life are even worse in poorer countries lacking in basic eye care knowledge and treatment. Unable to see the classroom blackboard or the way back home and deprived of the smiles of their parents, these kids’ daily lives are filled with fear.
